In this episode, I’m sharing with you some of the lessons I have learned and teach about nutrition and food. I’ll be talking about essential nutrition that we all need no matter what diet we are on and how to add healthy protein, carbohydrates, fats and whole-food nutrition into your every day meal plans.

Nourishing our bodies should be so simple, but in today’s world, it can be incredibly challenging when everything and everyone is trying to prove their way and disprove another, instead doing the responsible thing and teaching people how to cook, what their bodies need nutritionally (no matter what diet they want to follow) and how to listen to their bodies.

My wish is that this podcast will be the first step towards un-complicating healthy eating.

On average, we sit for 8 hours a day and that doesn’t include sleeping. That is a lot of sitting, a lot of inactivity and stiffness. It has been proven that exercise not only improves your mood, but also boosts your self-esteem.

If you want to feel healthy, happy, sexy, energized, confident, or desirable, exercise is an amazing way to enhance those feelings. Even if you are not at your ideal weight, you will immediately feel the benefits.

Benefits of Exercise: 

  • Boosts your happiness levels. 

  • Great for developing strong goal setting habits. When we achieve a fitness goal, even something as small as a walk, it motivates us to take action on our other goals. 

  • Naturally reduces your risk of heart disease.

  • Will help you get to sleep and stay asleep. 

  • Gives you a natural energy boost.

  • Increases strength and flexibility.

  • Improves your memory.

  • Increase your self-confidence.

  • Boost your metabolism.

  • Strengthens your immune system.

 

Dangers of Not Exercising:

  • Decreases your happy chemicals: Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, which have a major affect on your mood and emotions. 

  • Experience aches and pains caused by poor circulation from having a sedentary lifestyle. 

  • Lowers your immune system.

  • Puts you at a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

  • Increases your chances of weight gain.

  • Lowers your energy.

  • Creates sleep disorders.

 

So why do we resist something that makes us feel so good? I believe it is because we are not doing things that we enjoy, things that don’t feel like work because they are fun. We have been taught, NO PAIN, NO GAIN and that tends to turn a lot of people off.

I love being active, but I hate the gym. I won’t commit to the habit because I don’t enjoy it, it isn’t fun and it feels daunting. My favorite get moving routine is yoga. When I tried yoga for the first time, I was hooked. It did everything I wanted in an exercise routine. It was challenging, decreased my stress, helped me sleep better, I felt stronger, and most importantly, I enjoy it.

You do not need a fancy gym membership to get the benefits of exercise. Just the simple act of dancing around your living room can be a form of exercise. What activity do you love to do? Is it dancing, walking, yoga, running? Find something that you are going to enjoy and won’t dread doing. Something you look forward to doing. It doesn’t even have to be the same thing all the time. You can switch it up and mix it up all you want.

No matter what you do, if you move more than you sit, you will make healthier food choices, you will sleep better, you will decrease your stress, boost your immunity, and you will literally be happier because exercise releases happy endorphins into your brain. Talk about self-love!

 

Here are some Contagiously Positive get moving tips that you can do right at home or outside that don’t include any gym equipment:

 

For example:

  • Power walking or walking with a friend.

  • Bike around your neighborhood.

  • Yoga at home or outside on a warm day.

  • Dance to your favorite songs.

  • Mowing and raking the lawn.

  • Shoveling snow.

  • Sledding (those hills are hard on the legs!)

  • Get up from your desk and walk around.

  • Stand up and do lunges while talking on the phone.

  • Stretch a few times a day, even in your office.

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

  • Park further away from wherever you go throughout the day.

  • Stand or walk around while reading.

  • Do sit-ups while watching your favorite show.

  • Do some squats while cooking in the kitchen.

 

Every move you make can increase your odds of promoting whole-body health. Your body and mind loves it when you move and it doesn’t care what you do.
