From your nose to your toes, your eyes to your thighs, your lips to your hips, you are unique.
You hear it all the time, “you must LOVE yourself first.” As much as I agree with this, I also believe that there is a step that comes before love. The first step is LIKE. As someone who once struggled with an eating disorder, I know that love does not come first. For me, it started with liking my body, one body part at a time. Every day, I would like another part of myself, until one day, it turned into LOVE. Love for what I was born with. Love for what I could make my body do just by eating, thinking and moving in a positive way. Love for the realization that I don’t have to perfect to be happy.
Pretend you and your body are on a first date. You like certain parts, maybe you think there is room for improvement, and you need to get to know each other better before you even consider saying the L word. It might start with liking your hair today, liking your eyes tomorrow, liking your curves next week and liking your legs next month. You will like yourself, one body part at a time, until tomorrows, next weeks and next months turn into today and turn into LOVE.
If you are feeling frustrated, wondering why you can’t love yourself, don’t start with love, start with like. Like yourself today, so that you can learn to love yourself tomorrow.
