I watched this really great video the other day with Dr. Bruce Lipton. He was talking about how we have two minds. This is something I discuss in depth in UNLEASH Your Limiting Beliefs because it is so important that we know which is running the show.
We have our conscious mind and subconscious mind.
Simply put, the conscious mind is the mind that is very aware of what’s going on. It processes where you are, your surroundings, the work you are currently doing, the tasks, and all the thoughts that are right here now. Including read this share.
Then you have your subconscious mind. This is the part of your brain that allows you to do things without really thinking, which is what makes us do things habitually. Like driving home and realizing you were in a daze the entire time, but you made it safely. This is the habitual brain. We do and think things out of habit. Even if those habits don’t serve us, like being negative about everything and an eternal pessimist.
What I teach is how to program your subconscious mind to serve you. In this share, I’m going to be talking about what you can do to reprogram your brain so that your subconscious mind and your conscious mind support one another.
For example, if you say, “I want that thing, or I want to achieve this goal” that is your conscious self wanting something in the present moment. Your subconscious mind goes into its memory bank and sees if you have done this before, or if you actually belief you are worthy of receiving/achieving what you desire. If subconsciously you don’t believe you can, or don’t feel worthy, you will go about your day and your subconscious mind will bring up repeating old patterns of, “you can’t do that. You are so not good enough. Be afraid, stop, don’t do that, remember what happened last time.” If you don’t have any limiting beliefs around your desires, you will just go out and make it happen.
This is what I talk about in UNLEASH Your Limiting Beliefs. I’m less sophisticated than Dr. Bruce Lipton and I call it the battle between two voices – Saboteur vs. Inner Guide.
Let me explain….
I have this beautiful voice (and so do you) in my mind that encourages me, reminds me that I am enough, and that it is safe to show my authentic self. I also have a voice in my mind that tells me the exact opposite. I’ve accepted that this voice is there, but I feed, listen to, trust and honor the loving voice. I feed my subconscious mind so it can think optimistically by habit. This didn’t happen overnight because my default settings were set to negative for so long. By committing to daily reprogramming I am able to work through any self-sabotage with more ease. Meaning, I stop any negative conscious thoughts from becoming deeply rooted limiting beliefs from taking up residence in my subconscious mind. I don’t want those stored in the memory bank.
This is what I mean when I say, “taking up permanent residence in Negative-Ville.” This is also why experts say that it takes 21-28 days to form a habit. All you are doing is programming your subconscious mind to not be in a battle with your conscious mind.
LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BATTLE OF YOUR TWO VOICES
One voice speaks to you in loving, kind and supportive ways. That is your authentic highest self, your Inner Guide. The second voice is the one that crushes your dreams, tells you that you can’t do it, keeps you in the darkness and holds you down in fear. It also fills your mind with toxic thoughts and negativity. That is your Saboteur, not your highest self, but it is a part of you and comes with the human experience. We will always have both, but we can choose who is running the show and making our decisions.
Anything that keeps you in a dark fearful place is not your highest self. Once you believe this, you will be able to hear and trust your Inner Guide, and most importantly, take inspired action, including making decisions that serve and support you.
Your emotions are your guide. It is quite simple to tell the difference between the two voices when you start to really pay attention.
The Saboteur makes you feel unmotivated, keeps you in a fearful state, decreases or even eliminates all of your self-confidence, prevents you from love, keeps you in a constant, never ending negative state, removes all clarity and calmness and makes you believe that you have to stress, manipulate, hustle and push your way through life like a bulldozer.
The Saboteur is also the voice that turns negative thoughts into limiting beliefs and limiting beliefs into realities. Contagiously Positive Girl translation: most of the choices you make are driven by your beliefs. We get attached to the beliefs that we have of ourselves, whether it is negative or positive. That is why it is so difficult to change the way we think about ourselves. We get very comfortable with those beliefs. We know them inside and out and we know what to expect from them. Even though we know they are not good for us, the fear of change, the fear of the unknown, the fear of failure prevents us from doing the things that we want to do, or what we need to do to get back to our present moment awareness and back to our loving self.
Your Inner Guide, makes you feel love, joy, happiness, optimistic, even in challenging times, and reminds you that it is safe to be your authentic self because you are worthy, are good enough, have always been good enough, and will always be good enough.
Take a moment and reflect on your Saboteur voice.
What does your Saboteur make you believe about yourself?
What are your limiting beliefs and how are they holding you back?
What negative run of thoughts plays on repeat?
Your saboteur likes to make up excuses as to why you can’t do something. What are these excuses and how are you standing in your own way?
How does your Saboteur make you feel? What is the emotion attached to everything above?
OVERCOMING THE SABOTEUR
It isn’t enough to just know that it is there. To stop the Saboteur from controlling you, you must make space for the guidance you receive from your Inner Guide. Meaning, you have to take the opposite action, or not let it be your decision maker.
If you are working towards a goal and your Saboteur says, “you are not good enough to achieve that” take opposite action and keep working towards your goal. It sounds so simple, and at the beginning it won’t be, but it becomes easier and easier with practice.
That is what it truly takes, commitment and practice.
I’m not healthy because I moved my body once and ate one healthy meal. If I want to keep my physical body strong, I have to consistently eat healthy and consistently move my body.
That same principle applies to our emotional and mental wellbeing as well. If you stop working the work of feeling the way you want to feel, they weaken and become unhealthy. You feel spiritually fatigued (like something is missing in life), you feel emotionally drained, and your mind won’t shut off and begins to work against you. Why? Because it has been programmed to do so.
I didn’t reprogram my mind once and all my limiting beliefs went away. If I want to stay mentally and emotionally strong, I need to do the “work” and stay committed to my healing practice.
The tools only work if we use them.
A SIMPLE PRACTICE
The more actions you take in the present moment that support you, it eventually becomes a program in your subconscious mind. Overtime, with practice, it becomes habitual and your mind works for you, instead of against you.
If you are afraid of doing something, but you know that doing it will have a positive impact on your life, you have to take action even with the fear tagging along. Eventually you program your subconscious to believe that even when it is scary, you can still do it and you are safe. You are showing it that it is possible. You are showing it that you are worthy. You are showing it that you are good enough no matter what.
A simple practice is to begin to take note of all your negative programs and how they are informing your decisions. If they are not supportive, what is one micro step you can take to begin to rewrite the current program? It might an attitude shift, a different reaction to something, subtle action steps that make you feel more inspired, daily meditation, or walks in nature, working with a therapist or coach, daily journal writing, or eating ne healthy meal per day if you have a weight loss goal. Continue to do that every day until it becomes habitual and your conscious mind and subconscious mind are working in unison. I promise you, the more you do it, the easier it gets. One day, you won’t even think about it, it just is.
