I woke up at 4:30 am a couple of weeks ago and started to think of all the detours, pauses, and paths that have led me to where I am today.
One of the questions that I’ve practiced asking myself is, “how is this happening for me, instead of to me?”
This is so hard to do when we are deep in it, but it’s a helpful mindset practice. If we looked at our current challenges as detours, we can be frustrated, but also hopeful that it’s temporary. I’ll often use it as a mantra to help me through it, saying over and over again, “this is a temporary detour, I will be okay. I’ve gotten through more difficult challenges before.”
Let’s be honest, we don’t often see the value in what we experienced until we have healed, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use this awareness to help us get through the challenging times.
Where Are You?
Here is my question to you: are you currently on the wrong path, or are you taking a temporary detour because there is a lesson you need to learn, or some part of you that needs strengthening, remembering, or even changing?
Life’s detours are opportunities to take a different path, to make a different choice, but you have to be willing to take the leap and go in another direction, or to make new choices that feel uncomfortable because they are different.
It really does come down to the choices we make. We don’t have a crystal ball, so we have to trust ourselves. That is why I share so many tools to help you trust your inner guide. I want you to be, do and have all that you desire. When we take pause to notice what we need, and allow ourselves to take inspired action on giving it to ourselves, we stop waiting for life to happen to us and make it happen for us.
I have made and will continue to make choices that have taken me on detours. In the moment I feel like I’m on the wrong path, but I practice seeing them as learning opportunities. Asking myself: “What did I learn? What do I need to learn? How can I do better? How can I be better? What did I miss? Did I ignore my gut instinct?”
Don’t get me wrong; I have moments where I think it is all over and there is no way I’m ever going to be able to get back on track, but I’m able to bounce back quickly because I understand that I have the power to make another choice and put myself back on the path I was always meant to be on.
You Also Have The Power of Choice
Perhaps your relationship has taken a detour into a place you don’t want it to be. What new choices need to be made to put your relationship back on a path you want it to be on?
Maybe your career is no longer what you want it to be and the detour has made you feel uninspired by your work. What needs to change so you can be on a career path that feels inspiring again?
If you’ve detoured into negative-ville, you might decide that you want to make changes in your life that increase your feelings of joy, energy, vibrancy, love, health, self-esteem, body image, and/or self-love. What do you need to stop doing and begin to do to begin to enhance those feelings?
What new choices do you need to make?
You can enhance, change and course-correct absolutely every single area of your life. Some choices are going to be harder than others because change isn’t always easy, but it is always your choice.
Nelson Mandela said, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
Simply begin to see where you might need to make different choices. Baby step your way back to the path you want to be on. Don’t focus on where you are, visualize where you want to be, and ask yourself, “is the choice I’m about to make going to keep me where I don’t want to be, or is it going to take me where I want to go?”
Not a wrong path, just a detour.
Journal Prompts To Deepen The Inner Work
I was out on a forest walk with my dog Axl and I asked myself, “what have all the detours been trying to tell me?” Because we are always learning, growing and evolving, we often experience the same thing over and over again until we actually learn the lesson we need in order to grow, or to remember who we really are. Let’s take that to our journals.
What are your current detours that feel like you are completely on the wrong path?
Does this same detour keep showing up?
If yes, there is a lesson being missed. What is that lesson? Just go with your gut instinct and write down the first thing that comes to your mind.
This year I had found myself in similar detours with regards to a core desired feeling, which is FREEDOM – time freedom, emotional and mental freedom, and financial freedom. But I wasn’t feeling it! I kept wondering, “why me, why is this happen to me?” I started to look at my actions and choices and I realized it was because I kept making decisions that were taking me away from the freedom I want to experience. So I began to make different choices. The awareness alone made me feel free.
This is a wonderful journal prompt to deepen the inner work and get you back on the path you were meant to be on. Awareness is the first step and from there you can begin to take inspired action towards your deepest desires.
